Mainline Defense (...Bc5, ...Nf6)

  1. Black plays ...Bc5 to develop, control center and castle smoothly.
  2. If White plays c3 and d4, Black can calmly exchange or retreat bishop to a7.
  3. Nf6 is flexible: it attacks e4 and supports center pawns. If attacked, drop the bishop back or play ...d6.
  4. Avoid rushing pawn moves; complete development then play ...d6.
  5. Consider ...a6/...Ba7 or ...h6 to keep bishop safe from White's Bg5 idea.
Classic setup: ...Bc5, ...Nf6, ...d6, castle. Stay safe!
If White pushes d4, calmly exchange in the center.
Keep your bishop safe with ...Ba7 or ...h6. No need for adventures!

Two Knights Defense (...Nf6)

  1. Black plays ...Nf6 to hit e4 and challenge White’s center.
  2. If White plays Ng5 threatening f7, Black responds with ...d5!
  3. Don’t capture on d5 with the knight right away (avoid Fried Liver danger) — use ...Na5 or ...Nd4 tactical defense options.
  4. If under attack, trade pieces and head for a safe endgame.
Use ...Nf6 and ...d5 to stop White's attack.
If Ng5, play ...d5 and then ...Na5 or ...Nd4 to stay safe!

Giuoco Pianissimo (...Be7)

  1. Black develops quietly, ...Be7 and castles, keeping things solid.
  2. This defense waits for White’s plan, then uses ...d6 and ...Nc6 to keep the center healthy.
  3. Avoid weaknesses: play ...h6 or ...a6 before White pushes Bg5 or b4/b5.
...Be7 is a solid move for a safe king and stable center.
Castle quickly, then wait for White’s threats to respond.

Evans Gambit (...Bxb4, ...Ba5)

  1. If White sacrifices b4 (Evans Gambit), Black can accept with ...Bxb4 or decline with ...Ba5.
  2. It’s fine to return the pawn if White gets too much activity: stay solid.
  3. Quick development, king safety and central pawns are your goals—not keeping the pawn at all costs!
Accept the pawn with ...Bxb4, or safely retreat to ...Ba5.
Don’t get greedy! If White attacks, return the pawn for safety.

Fried Liver Attack Defense (...Nxd5, ...Na5, ...Nd4)

  1. If White tries Ng5+Nxf7/Fried Liver, respond with ...d5 first.
  2. Don’t capture ...Nxd5 unless you’re safe; ...Na5 and ...Nd4 are best tactics to dodge attack.
  3. Survive the attack, trade pieces, reach a solid endgame—this is winning for Black!
...d5 then ...Na5 or ...Nd4 – these are the best moves to stop Fried Liver!
If White attacks, trade queens and aim for safety.

Italian Gambit/Quiet Game (...d6 structures)

  1. Black plays ...d6, protecting e5 and waiting for White’s plan.
  2. Develop pieces: ...Be7, ...Nc6, castle, ...a6, ...h6 for safety.
  3. This leads to a slow and steady game—look for pawn breaks later.
...d6 setups are simple: defend the center, play for piece safety.

Anti-Italian (...h6, ...a5 ideas)

  1. Black tries ...h6 or ...a5 to stop White’s bishop or queenside expansion.
  2. This avoids sharp tactics and keeps everything safe.
  3. If White plays b4 or Bg5, Black can play ...a5 or ...h6 and then develop as usual.
Use ...h6 and ...a5 to slow down White’s plans and keep your position solid.
