Fast attacks, open lines, and tricky tactics – welcome to the Scotch Gambit!
1. Basic Scotch Gambit Setup
The Scotch Gambit is a super-aggressive way to open the center and rush your pieces into attacking squares.
Pawn to e4 – Grab central space and get ready to attack.
Knight to f3 – Attack the e5 pawn and prepare quick castling.
Pawn to d4 – Just like the Scotch, you challenge the center right away.
exd4 – Black accepts the pawn and opens lines.
Bishop to c4 – This is the Scotch Gambit idea: instead of recapturing, you develop a piece with a threat against f7!
Simple Summary
In the Scotch Gambit you give Black a pawn (for a while) so your pieces jump out fast and aim straight at the king.

Why Play the Scotch Gambit?
Immediate pressure: You point your bishop and knight right at the weak f7 square.
Fast development: You don’t waste time grabbing the pawn back; you bring pieces into the game.
Open lines and tactics: The open center gives you chances for sacrifices, discovered attacks, and forks.
Great for learning attack: You practice ideas like bringing more attackers, using open files, and punishing slow moves.
If you like sharp games where you attack the king early, the Scotch Gambit is a perfect weapon.
Kids' Scotch Gambit Plan
Aim at f7:
Your knight on f3 and bishop on c4 both look at the f7 pawn. This is Black’s weakest spot at the start of the game, so many tactics come from this target.
Castle quickly:
After playing Bc4, try to castle short soon. A safe king means your rooks can join the attack on open files.
Use your lead in development:
Because Black spends time taking pawns, you get more pieces out. Use that time to bring rooks to the center, put queens on active squares, and create threats.
What is the Scotch Gambit?
The Scotch Gambit usually comes from 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 exd4 4.Bc4. Instead of taking back on d4 with the knight, White plays Bc4 and offers a pawn to get a fast attack and active pieces.
